Explanation
The Administration Application lets administrators control what each user and group is allowed to do on the wiki, by granting or denying rights such as "View", "Edit", "Delete" or "Admin".
A right is granted at one of three levels: the whole wiki, a page together with its children, or a single page. Right Types lists every right, what it permits and where it can be set, and Rights Resolution explains which rule wins when several of them apply to the same user. Rights Storage says where each rule is kept, and why the administration does not always show it.
Rights are granted and revoked from the administration. Set the Rights of a Wiki covers a whole wiki, Set the Rights of a Page covers a single page or a branch of the hierarchy, Restrict the Wiki to Registered Users closes a wiki to unregistered visitors without editing individual rights, and Open the Wiki to Unregistered Users does the opposite.
Installed extensions can register rights of their own, which are set in separate administration sections: Change the Extension Rights Globally and Change Extension Rights at Page Level.
Rights decide who may act on a page. Which rights the content of a page may itself use when it runs is a separate setting, described in Required Rights of a Page.
FAQ
I allowed a right but the user still cannot act. What should I check?
Rules set closer to the page win, so check the page and its parents before the wiki. Rights Resolution gives the full order in which rules are examined.
